Eye shadows and eyeliners are available in a wide variety of shades and finishes, so much so that it can at times be overwhelming to know which one to choose! You might think that wearing a bright eye makeup shade for example is daring but in actual fact a vibrant purple eye shadow may just be the trick to make your eyes pop.
We have over 35 mineral eye shadows in our collection and some of those hold multiple shades in one compact, which means you have the luxury of being able to experiment with a multitude of colours and textures. But, how do you choose the ‘right’ eye shadow for you?
Erin Voyer, National Educator for jane iredale talks us through how to pick the perfect eye shadow shade to complement your eye colour, using basic colour theory. Using the colour wheel will take the guess work out of choosing the right shade.
Colours that are opposite each other on the colour wheel are complementary colours. So, determine your eye colour and then see what the opposite, or complementary colour is. The complementary colour will work with your natural colour to draw attention to your eyes and make them pop!
Red is opposite green on the colour wheel, however for some a red eye shadow can be polarising and not ideal for a natural, everyday look. Instead, we suggest trying shades in the pink family or anything with a reddish undertone, like bronze and mahogany. You can also try eggplant hues to allow the green or gold highlights in your eye to really pop.
Try: Solar Flare Eye Shadow Kit, Sorbet Eye Shadow Duo, Pink Bliss Eye Shadow Triple, Ravishing Eye Shadow Triple, Purple Rain Eye Shadow Kit, Twilight Eye Shadow Triple, Amethyst Mystikol Powdered Eyeliner.
For the blue-eyed beauties you are going to want to look for shadows with an orange undertone such as rich browns and terracottas. Warm golden tones with shimmer will also help to bring out gold highlights in your eyes.
Try: Naturally Glam Eye Shadow Kit, Golden Peach Eye Shadow Duo, Solar Flare Eye Shadow Kit, Pure Basics Eye Shadow Kit, 24-Karat Gold Dust, Basic Brown Eyeliner Pencil, Dark Topaz Mystikol Powdered Eyeliner.
Brown-eyed babes, you are the lucky ones! You have the most versatile eye colour because they are neutral, therefore, you can wear almost any colour on your eyes. Try deep purple or bronzy golds to bring out the clarity in your eyes or for a more dazzling eye makeup look choose charcoal or silver shades. Pro tip: Intensify your eye makeup look with a black liner!
By all means, if you have blue eyes and you want to want to create a gorgeous navy smokey eye, go right ahead! These aren’t hard and fast rules however the complementary colours will bring out your natural eye colour, so if you want to emphasise and put focus on your eyes, the colour wheel is a good place to start with choosing an eye shadow or liner shade.
