How to Choose a Makeup Primer

Primer Blog Post Group Image-2Beautiful makeup begins with a beautiful base, and a beautiful, mineral makeup primer is the secret to a smooth, even, glowing complexion.

Our iconic Smooth Affair Face Primers are formulated to balance the skin, whatever its natural state, creating a smooth canvas for makeup (or to be worn on their own!) and allowing your natural beauty to shine. As per the entire jane iredale collection, consider the Smooth Affair Primers an extension of your skincare, delivering essential minerals to the skin and really caring for it, working beyond just makeup adhearsion.

2021 saw Illuminating Glow Face Primer join the existing jane iredale Smooth Affair family while 2022 saw the Mattifying Face Primer ensuring every skin type and beauty need is catered for. Not sure how to choose the right primer for your skin (or if primers are even worth it?!)? Read on for our tips.

Are face primers really essential?

As with everything in the realm of beauty (excluding SPF!), nothing is really “essential”- it’s all about personal preference and having fun! That said, if smooth, glowing skin and the longevity of your foundation and other complexion products are important to you, we strongly recommend working a mineral makeup primer into your makeup routine.

Consider a makeup primer to be the beauty equivalent of paint primer. It may not sound all that glamorous, but in the same way priming your canvas will create a smooth base, allow for greater colour payoff, and give your paints something to really adhere to, a makeup primer will help you get the absolute most out of your foundation.

How to use a primer makeup

Smooth Affair Primers can be applied directly to clean skin with either a brush or your fingertips - whichever you prefer! We love using our fingers to help the product really sink into the skin so that your skin can drink up all the primer’s mineral benefits.

The Smooth Affair Primers also work synergistically with the rest of the jane iredale range. One of our favourite ways to use them is to mix a bit of primer in with our Glow Time Pro BB Cream to create a more sheer coverage foundation, or with the HydroPure Tinted Serum to transform it into an even more dewy, tinted serum!

Choosing the best face primer for your skin

If you are looking for a “lit from within” finish from your makeup, or if your skin errs towards dry and needs a little extra hydration boost, we recommend Smooth Affair Illuminating Glow Face Primer. The newest addition to the Smooth Affair stable, this illuminating primer has a soft-focus pearl finish that imparts an almost ethereal glow on the skin, subtly catching and diffusing the light to blur any imperfections. This primer contains Hyaluronic Acid to hydrate the skin and lock in moisture, and can be worn both with and without makeup applied on top.

If your skin is on the oilier side and you are wishing to mattify your base and prevent makeup from slipping and separating with wear, we recommend the Smooth Affair Mattifying Face Primer. The mineral ingredients packed into this skin-loving primer help to balance and control the skin’s natural oil production, while blurring the appearance of pores and fine lines for smooth makeup application.

If you desire more hydrated skin and a more even, youthful complexion, we recommend working the brightening properties of the Smooth Affair Brightening Facial Primer into your beauty routine. This primer works to improve the skin’s hydration levels and overall skin health by preventing transepidermal water loss as well as brightening the skin, minimising the appearance of pores and fine lines, and creating a smooth, firmed base for makeup.
