How To Combat Winter Skin Changes

As we edge closer to winter, the cool snap can wreak havoc on our skin. Both cold wind and artificial indoor heating are extremely drying, leaving our dewy summer skin feeling tight and uncomfortable and looking dull and flaky. A change in the seasons calls for an updated beauty routine, so put your best face forward by making these quick and easy changes to your makeup collection.

Step 1: Prep and Hydration

While a dull complexion can be disguised by a dewy-finish foundation and a creamy highlighter, dry skin is more difficult to mask. Prep your skin with our Magic Mitt to buff off excess dry skin for a micro exfoliation before you begin your makeup routine. Foundation can cling to dry, flaky patches and when our skin is dehydrated it will try to suck up moisture from any possible source. To combat this and create a smooth, well-hydrated base for makeup, opt for a hydrating primer like our jane iredale Smooth Affair Facial Primer & Brightener. This skin quenching primer acts like a drink of water for your skin, ensuring your foundation applies evenly and lasts for as long as possible without any uncomfortable dryness throughout the day. As a bonus, it can also double as your daily moisturiser.

Don’t forget your lips! They too can suffer with the harsh change of season, hydrating and protecting your lips should be a daily habit and our jane iredale LipDrink Lip Balm SPF 15 is just the product that will keep the lips soft and supple.

Step 2: Colour and Texture

Dry skin calls for a more hydrating foundation formula, but the change in season can also mean a different base colour. Even if you aren’t an avid sunbaker, your skin will naturally see less sun during the winter months. This absolutely does NOT mean you can forgo your daily SPF, but it does mean that your summer foundation may be a shade or two too dark for your winter complexion. When selecting a creamy, more hydrating texture for your new season foundation try Glow Time Full Coverage Mineral BB Cream or Liquid Minerals, consider choosing a different shade too. To accurately colour match, swipe your foundation near your collarbone - while it might be commonplace to colour match your foundation to the skin on your face, our faces are often protected from the sun with SPF and can be a touch paler than the rest of our body. By matching the colour to your chest, you won’t be left with a tell-tale makeup line around your jaw, nor will you need to work overtime to properly blend out your foundation, down your neck. Why not match to your neck, you ask? Our necks are always paler than the rest of our body as our chin creates a shadow over our neck, keeping the sun at bay!

Step 3: All Day Dew

No matter how well you prime and how moisturising your foundation is, dryness can still strike throughout the day due to environmental factors. The remedy? Be prepared. Keep a hydrating facial mist on hand/in your car/handbag/desk drawer to give your skin an antioxidant moisture boost throughout the day without having to rub in a creamy moisturiser and ruin your makeup! Perfect for post-gym workouts too when you are on the go.

A facial mist will deliver serious hydration to your skin as well as giving your makeup a freshen up and your skin a radiant glow. Our organic jane iredale Hydration Sprays double as a makeup setting spray to ensure your makeup will last from early in the morning well into the evening, making it the perfect beauty tool to keep on hand if you’re dashing straight from the desk to the gym and then out for Friday night drinks!
